When you find a method of exercise that works for you, you sick faithfully to it because you see the results and have fun doing it.  Barre Fitness has become this for me, a unique method of cross-conditioning that utilizes the most effective aspects of ballet, pilates, flexibility and strength training.  In a typical class you will do a warm up, spend time at the ballet barre and do mat work – being led through a low impact, high intensity workout with lots of movements designed to challenge your core and lengthen and tone your body (no tutus required).

The benefits of the barre: Strong core and back muscles; increased flexibility and mobility; sculpted arms, abs, bottom and thighs; improved posture and balance; increased co-ordination.

I love to wear a bodysuit and leggings to Barre Fitness – though tight clothing is not a requirement, I think this style of outfit helps me focus on every muscle in my body and remember to engage my core (ballet studios are enveloped by mirrors – no body checking allowed, use them to focus your movements!)  Here I’m wearing my favourite bodysuit from Kore Wear and leggings from Zella at Nordstrom.

Are you a fan of the barre? Or does it bring out the ‘black swan’ in you? Leave me a comment below…
